University project - brief from HarperCollins
I designed these Agatha Christie covers to stand out from previous editions and other titles on the shelf, and get a Gen Z audience to reconsider what they think of classic crime and of the era. I identified the glamorous, high-society setting, which provides a level of escapism, as being a key draw, both at the time of writing and now. I conveyed this luxurious feel and relatability to the modern day by identifying the fact that vivid colours were as popular then as now - we only associate that time with faded colours because of fading over time. I used primarily jewel tones for a sense of richness, with more neon-like colours for contrast. The final element to bring it all together is some of the typography being slightly broken and misaligned. This takes it from a simply elegant, luxurious setting to one where something is slightly wrong, suggesting a mystery to be solved...
