I set myself a brief to design promotional media for an fictional exhibition, based on a book I've been reading, Otherlands. The book is a beautiful narrative describing what the Earth has looked like in past geological eras and how we know these things. I thought that this combination of creativity in writing and scientific detail would work well as an exhibition.
My response uses scientific details, such as maps of the geological site, details of its and the museum's location, artistic reconstruction of a fossilised animal, and the name and date of the era. I placed text within the map outline, and offset it from the image to give the gentle impression of light through leaves, making the design more soft and dynamic. I also included the poetry at the beginning of the chapter in Otherlands, as it inspires reflection on our world and what this knowledge means to us.

Poster design for an idea for an exhibition at the Natural History museum, based on the book Otherlands by Thomas Halliday. Shapes drawn from a map of the geological site contain reconstructions from fossils, echoed by the same shapes containing text, evoking light through leaves.
